Basic layouts

I was wondering in a factory where tech level is constantly updated, so usually you will have high level input/output units, but low level manufacturing units. Wouldn't it have more throughput using the default 3 source materials factory layout? Level 9 output unit has enough space acts as a buffer storage unit. (or you can just build warehouses for them if fluctuation is huge)
