The latest version has modifications that rendered save game files from previous versions incompatible.
To load your old save game files, you may revert back to the older version of the game. Which version of the game did you use for saving the save games?

Please try version 4.4.15 and see if it can load your save game.

I was bored with my old campaign and decided to start a new one with a different focus. But going forward, if a patch is going to render one's saved games useless, shouldn't a warning be included?

Yes, the Capitalism Lab launcher will ask you to confirm before applying the patch.
