I just preferred the previous version with New and Unread posts listed next to Notifications and Private messages.

Unfortunately, the previous style is called subsilver and it is no longer supported in the latest version of phpBB board 3.3.x and there is no way to add the Active Topics button on the current style (its name is Prosilver).
